to Nov 18

YPE NYC Social Impact Week 2022

It's not too late to join! YPE NYC’s Social Impact Week+ 2022 begins November 7-18, and we need you. We invite you to join in this unique volunteering opportunity to directly improve the lives of some of the most vulnerable people around the world.

Missing Maps:

The aim of Missing Maps is to map the most crisis-prone parts of the developing world – areas which lack digital maps. Access to accurate maps is vital for humanitarian aid organizations (including global partners like the Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières) to deliver lifesaving services.

Watch this short video to learn about humanitarian mapping. Although not required, if you would like to watch a training webinar, one can be accessed here.

How easy is it to Map?

Mapping is very simple. No previous experience or specific skills are required. Absolutely anyone can map. All you need is access to a computer-- volunteers view a small satellite image (remotely) and draw an outline of the buildings to add them to the map.

How long do I have to volunteer for?

You can map as little as 10 minutes (though we kindly encourage you to map whenever you have free time so we can increase our impact). Mapping can be done at any time, independently (no restrictions)! Please remember to tag #YPE (in the ‘changeset comment’ feature upon final submission of mapped task).

In advance of the Mapathon, please remember to:

Create a mapping account by following this video or reading steps 1-4 here.

You can reach OpenStreetMap for any help with accounts at support@openstreetmap.org

What area(s) will we be mapping?

Here are a few projects which will help identify settlements, which will support humanitarian activities as well as inform longer term risk prevention in these regions:

Flooding and Landslides in South Africa - According to national authorities, 443 people died, over 40,000 are missing and more than 40,000 people have been displaced:

COVID-19 Response in Botswana, helping government agencies and responders with basic data needs:

Flooding and Landslides in Guatemala in rural areas with high levels of extreme poverty:

*You may select any project you wish to map using the filters below (and choosing a Project that maps Buildings only).

YPE NYC Hosts: Energy in Cryptocurrency Panel

Less than a year ago, the global cryptocurrency market cap peaked at over $3 trillion, surpassing the GDP of nations such as India, the UK, France, and Italy.

Despite its popularity, for the majority of people, the concept of cryptocurrencies remains incomprehensible: a foreign, ephemeral currency that only exists digitally. The reality, however, is that blockchain technologies, like cryptocurrencies, are disrupting more than just the digital and financial worlds.

Join YPE NYC for a panel discussion with thought leaders across the cryptocurrency industry in academia, policy, law, and crypto mining, to learn how blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies are impacting the real physical world in a very real way – through energy!

RSVP to attend this in-person panel discussion on Thursday, September 22nd during NYC Climate Week.

Discussing Impacts to the Energy Landscape from the Russia-Ukraine War

Discussing Impacts to the Energy Landscape from the Russia-Ukraine War

Please join us for a critical discussion on the role of energy in the Russian-Ukrainian War, and impacts to North America.

100% of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit that provides food, medical care and emergency supplies to refugee families, including families in Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, and Yemen. Our hearts are with those affected by war.

Please join YPE NYC for a virtual panel on the impacts of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to domestic and international energy markets.

Discussions regarding international conflict, US foreign policy, and trade are incomplete without an understanding of the global energy landscape; we’ve brought together a panel of experts in an effort to understand how energy informs political decision-making (and vice versa.). Beginning with an introductory presentation by Dr. Margarita Balmaceda, we will be joined by a panel of experts for a 45-min moderated conversation to discuss recent geopolitical escalation, the impact of international sanctions, and how the invasion of Ukraine informs the conversation around US energy independence.

Questions are encouraged to be submitted during registration.

Speakers:

  • Introductory Presentation: Dr. Margarita Balmaceda, Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University, and Associate of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University

  • Panelist: Rebecca Abou-Chedid, Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright

  • Panelist: Shrutih Tewarie, Partner at Foley Hoag

  • Moderator: Anjali Berdia, Sustainability Analyst at SDCL

Agenda:

  • 6:00 - 6:05 pm - Gathering

  • 6:05 - 6:20 pm - Introductory Presentation

  • 6:20 - 6:50 pm - Panel

  • 6:50 - 7:00 PM - Wrap-Up

Speaker Bios

Dr. Margarita Balmaceda

Dr. Balmaceda, Professor of Diplomacy and International Relations, joined the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University in 1999, where she received tenure in 2003 and was promoted to Professor in 2010. She teaches courses on the Politics of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity, on Post-Soviet and East European Politics and Foreign Policies, as well on Master's Research Project.

Currently she is an Associate of the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies and of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University. A specialist on the comparative energy politics of the post-Soviet states, since 2000 she has been “following the pipeline” – i.e. following the complex web of interconnections that accompany the energy relationship between Russian oil and gas producers, post-Soviet transit states, and European consumers. This research agenda has taken her on multiple field research stays in Eastern Europe and the former USSR, including Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, Hungary and Moldova. Support from three Fulbright Awards, as well as funding from the Ford Foundation, the, Humboldt Foundation, the DAAD and many other foundations, has made possible such ambitious research agenda. Fluent in Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, German, near-fluent in Hungarian and with a good working knowledge of Belarusian, Dr. Balmaceda feels very much at home almost everywhere in Eastern Europe. And with the strong international presence at the School of Diplomacy and International Relations, she is happy to use her language skills in many one-to one discussions with her students.

Rebecca Abou-Chedid

Rebecca Abou-Chedid is a Partner at Norton Rose Fulbright. Her practice focuses on the representation of public and private entities in domestic and international project finance and energy projects. Ms. Abou-Chedid represents project sponsors, commercial banks, and multilateral agencies on the acquisition and financing of domestic and international infrastructure and energy projects. Abou-Chedid served as Vice-Chair of NRF’s Minority Lawyers Network, is a member of the board of directors of the Foundation for Middle East Peace and SEED for Change and is a fellow with the US/Middle East Project.

Shrutih Tewarie

Shrutih Tewarie is a partner in Foley Hoag’s Litigation and White Collar departments, and serves as the Co-Chair of the firm’s Trade Sanctions and Export Controls practice.

Shrutih represents national and international entities, and their officers, directors and others in a variety of criminal and regulatory investigations, including grand jury investigations, in matters involving allegations of government contracting and health care fraud, bribery, violations of the False Claims Act, and in anti-corruption, trade sanctions, export controls and anti-money laundering matters. She is skilled at helping clients navigate and defend against investigations and formal and informal inquiries by a wide range of governmental authorities, including the U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney’s Offices, the U.S. Departments of Treasury and Commerce, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Host / Moderator: Anjali Berdia

Anjali Berdia is the Sustainability Analyst for Sustainable Development Capital LLP (SDCL), an investment management firm that funds energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions in Europe, North America, and Asia. In her role, Anjali supports both the ESG Team and Sustainable Cities Team, specifically focusing on monitoring environmental policy developments, establishing the firm’s decarbonization strategy, publishing the ESG report, and helping to facilitate public-private collaboration.

Previous to her current role, Anjali worked for SDCL as a Sustainable Cities and Communications Intern after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2021. YPE Northeast – Sustainable Cities

Join the members of the Philadelphia, Boston, and New York City YPE chapters for a comparison of each city's energy-focused sustainability plan and initiatives.

All three cities have ambitious clean energy and sustainability goals but different demographics that will likely lead to unique and location-specific implementations. They also face distinctive regional and local challenges that impact the execution of these initiatives. Where NYC is a center for finance and venture-capital funding and Boston emphasizes clean-tech innovation, Philly has PJM, the country's largest electricity-grid operator, in its backyard while PA is a major energy producer historically focused on coal and natural gas. Hear from the individuals responsible for leading foundational changes in each of our cities through a virtual panel discussion on these critical issues, then continue the conversation through small groups with the panelists and conclude the night with some casual networking.

Moderator:

  • H.G. Chissell – Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Advanced Energy Group

Panelists:

"The Future of Hydrogen-Powered Transportation" with YPE NYC and YPE SF Bay Area

Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have been touted as the solution for decarbonizing the transportation sector. While most agree that BEVs are practical and cost-effective for light-duty transportation, the jury is still out on areas of transportation that require higher energy density, such as material handling in distribution centers, long-haul cargo, maritime shipping, and aviation. Many believe that hydrogen is the answer, evidenced by significant public and private market activity in the space over the past year. However, the vast majority of current hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels. For hydrogen to become the transportation fuel of the future, “green” hydrogen will need to continue to see cost reductions, technology improvements, and support from policy makers.

Join us on Wednesday, September 15th for a virtual discussion on the future of Hydrogen-powered Transportation! YPE San Francisco and YPE NYC partnered to bring you panelists from Plug PowerZeroAvia, and BayoTech to discuss how hydrogen can be harnessed cleanly and efficiently to overcome its supply chain, scalability and cost challenges, and what role it can play in the transportation decarbonization toolbox.
